Ramya’s going to write about the sports bar where she watches her team play every Sunday during football season. Those are just a few more narrative possibilities for structuring your essay. At 650 words, each of these will be best understood as a five-paragraph essay, so a basic structure stays the same, but the way things begin and end will not. You’ll see us return to these students’ ideas as we work through outlines. Ramya could try to write something about medicine. Or she could write about soccer, dance, or speech. Essay Writing Unit

Essay Writing Unit Ninety nine percent of the structure of your essay is exactly the same as you learned in secondary school. You might think you’re too good for Point, Evidence, Explain. How can you defend yourself against that response? Ideally you want to be able to split your burdens of proof into a few different points. Start your intro with the central claim of your essay. If I’m reading it, I want to know within literally five seconds what you’re trying to convince me of. It is better to be more measured and tie your argument to precise examples or case studies. Avoid unnecessary description â€" only include general background details and history when they add to your argument, e.g. to show a crucial cause and effect. Next, think about what you need to prove in order to make that claim. What might be the immediate negative reaction of someone reading your central claim? However, it's worth taking some time to check it over. Markers often comment that more time spent on editing and proofreading could have really made a difference to the final mark. Use counter-arguments to your advantage â€" if you find viewpoints that go against your own argument, don't ignore them. It strengthens an argument to include an opposing viewpoint and explain why it is not as convincing as your own line of reasoning. Be specific - avoid making sweeping generalisations or points that are difficult to support with specific evidence. You won't be so close to your work, so you will see your errors more easily. Be ruthless at this stage â€" if the information isn't directly answering the question, cut it out! You will get many more marks for showing you can answer the question in a controlled and focused way than you will for an unordered list of everything you know about a topic. You might have had enough of your work by now, and be hoping to just hand it in! Practice distinguishing between description and analysis . It can help to highlight each in a different colour to see what the balance looks like. For each point that you make in your essay, you need to support it with evidence. If the reading list is really short, you’ll need to go beyond it. Look through the reference lists of the papers and books you’ve just read. Mark out a few of the most promising-looking readings. Curiosity drives an individual to search for an understanding of issues. When such interest becomes engraved in an individual, it molds students into independent individuals who find the truth while learning. Try reading your essay aloud, as this will slow you down, make you focus on each word, and show you when your sentences are too long. Ideally leave a day between finishing your essay and proofreading it. How are you going to relate your argument to the existing literature? Make sure you know their arguments reasonably well and have armed yourself with flexible quotes from their work. If you can, familiarise yourself with the people who think they’re wrong and awful. Figure out if there are arguments which are unresolved and see if you can make a contribution towards resolving them. They might ask you to ‘critically assess’ some claim or concept, or ask you a simple question which you’ll have to answer in a complex way. They’ll make a statement and tell you to discuss it. They might ask you to compare and contrast two different ideas, or say which of two theories is the more accurate. You don’t want to get penalised because you didn’t reference your readings properly after you’ve put in all that effort to make sure that your arguments are founded in the literature.

It denotes that something came before the part of the sentence you are quoting. Once you have a final draft ready, have someone read it to look for errors and provide feedback. Every twist or nuance of your argument should be in there; every introductory and concluding sentence for every paragraph, making it explicit how this paragraph answers your question. Most professional relationships are subjects to disputes. Consider if your selected college essay writing help has a protocol for such issues. It is important to present the information in a crisp and concise manner. The paragraphs should be limited to 5-6 sentences. To conclude, one can say that essay writing is a skill that is mastered gradually. Sometimes, in the process of writing, you’ll realise that you entirely disagree with two-days-ago you, and you don’t really believe in the argument you’re trying to make. If it is the case, go back to the drawing board. Don’t plough on regardless â€" a lack of conviction will show in your essay. This article covers sufficient details about an essay. The article has provided you with the necessary understanding of how to structure an essay. It also covered the necessary tips to make the essay more effective. In addition to that, the article acts as a guideline for improving your essay writing skills. If you are provided an essay with a specified word limit, make sure to follow it. Usually, in competitive exams, the essay topics come with a word limit restriction. Ideally, 10-15% more words than the specified minimum length are acceptable and act in your favor. Hence, try to maintain this word limit standard in your writing. A conclusion is an overall summary of the topic along with a brief summary of what has been discussed. It is mandatory for every essay to have a conclusion. The conclusion mainly contains topic sentence rephrased in a concluding manner. This is followed by a brief summary of the topic discussed. This is another sort of an analytical essay where the writer needs to first identify the problems that might come up in an event or a situation and suggest solutions to it. A coherent essay is an essay which contains well-linked sentences and paragraphs. Ideally, a coherent essay would contain connecting words in almost every sentence. For instance, “However”, “In addition to”, “Firstly”, “Secondly”, “Henceforth”. The connecting words help in giving the reader an experience which allows the information to flow into the brain. Hence, the reader never loses the link to what is being read.

The Basics Of Essay Writing

The Basics Of Essay Writing Is your aim to offer the steps to solve a particular problem, persuade readers in your point of view, or educate people about some idea, person or event? We’re giving away a $1,000 scholarship to affected college students. All you need to do is submit a proof of your enrollment. Write the first draft from start to finish, even if you know your thoughts are out of order. You can re-arrange them at a later time, but the initial run through will be as fluid as possible. If a student needs to answer the phone during an emergency, he or she can step out of the classroom to do so. This setup would give the students and the instructor peace of mind. Arguments against cell phone control typically focus on safety concerns. Should a crisis occurs in the classroom, students should have their phones on hand to make a call. And that means she’ll have to revise and rethink and ask more questions. She’ll come to her overall claim, introduction and conclusion from her discoveries -- not the other way around. We ask students to begin by exploring something specific in the text, rather than a big idea or generalization. That means she must begin by admitting, “I don’t understand” -- a daunting and difficult prospect. A little while back, we wrote an essay arguing against killing off the undergraduate essay. The process work we’re advocating here is multistaged, iterative, messy work. The student may move from the text to questions to freewriting or brainstorming to drafting, then go back to the text and so on, deepening her analysis by asking questions. With the right amount of control and flexibility, colleges can create a pleasant learning environment with maximum safety and minimal interruptions. The best solution is to create cell phone usage rules that allow devices to be accessible without disturbing other students’ educational opportunities. Find reliable websites with such domains as .org (non-profit), .edu , and .gov . Google Scholar and Google Books are both awesome ways of finding out what’s available in terms of your topic. Avoid websites in which information may be edited by anyone, like Wikipedia. Students should be permitted to keep their phones in their bags, pockets, or other belongings as long as the phones are on silent in class. Vibrate settings may be permitted if the instructor does not believe it will distract him or her, since the noise of the vibration may not be noticeable in a large classroom. Each school, professor and student body is different. Colleges must adapt their rules and discipline efforts to reflect the current needs of their students. Eliminating cell phones in college classrooms is an overstretch, but there are ways to balance students’ rights and instructors’ rights. The piece generated a lot of reaction, much of it focused on the question of what an essay should be. Carefully read your paper and remove the mistakes. Almost every writing assignment requires a student to make a research. Pick a subject that you can find enough material about. She may use a range of visually rich, active-learning methods to generate ideas, get her thoughts in order and fill gaps. As she figuring out the story she’s trying to tell, her early drafts will most likely be incomplete, overwritten or hard for the reader to follow.

About New Deal Coalition In American Elections Of 1896 - 1100 Words

About New Deal Coalition In American Elections Of 1896 (Essay Sample) Content: ProfessorInstitution:Course:Date:New deal coalition in American elections of 1896The new deal coalition based on largely and was an aberration in American history. This is true due to the instances of division between working class and farmers in the coalition. In the first century and half of American history, people were devoted to their political party which gave them identity, defined social relationships that provided a way to take part in democratic process and offered some stake in a better future. Voting and the market were perhaps two most important means ever devised for reaching collective decisions through individual choices. Political parties often transcended state and territorial borders and people moving into new areas could carry with them the party slogans, rituals and identifications they known back home. Adopting techniques that worked in the new world of popular politics, people in the last half of the nineteenth century celebrated by singing, sho uting and marching terming themselves wide awakes . Reflecting the developments, which followed the civil war in 1864, became the eyes of historians and political scientist the time of greatest attachment to political parties in the countrys history (Lipset, 52).Between the first decade of the nineteenth century and first decade of twentieth, the legal right to vote was successively extended to propertied white man, then to black men after the civil war and finally to women in 1920. At the same time, changes in the party system reduced the motivation and the capacity of the local parties to mobilize voters. Voters registration intended to discourage voting in big cities, and by poor and less educated. The effects of these institutional changes necessarily obscured introducing urbanization, income earning, and education as controls. A series of legal and procedural changes introduced into electoral system that obstructed the actual ability of many people to vote. At the same time , changes in the party system reduced the motivation and the capacity of the local parties to mobilize voters. In 19th century, the tribalism characteristics of politics that made high levels of mass participation possible encouraged limiting conflicts especially on the class conflict. Between 1820 and 1832, the election turnout was good but it increased up to seventy six percent in 1860 then it drastically dropped in 1868 due to the 1864 civil war. The election conducted in 1896, a corporate republican mobilization defeated the populist and the most important mass participation possible even while limiting conflict especially class conflict. The election also inaugurated a pattern of sectional one-party dominance by the republicans smashed and party completion reduced the way was cleared for the acceleration of changes in the rules governing voting and in the organization and outreach strategies of the parties. The popular politics of preindustrial countries are often marked by cli entelist methods of organizing participation as well as by intense tribal identification. As voter participation expanded so did the reliance by the political parties on government patronage and on the clientelist linkages to the electorate which government patronage made possible (Lipset 45).The challenge posed by the farmers movement seemed hopeless and for several reasons one being the effort by largely protestant farmers to build a national coalition with the largely immigrant catholic working class ran against the grain of ethnoreligious politics. William Jennings Bryan was just such a master of the rhetoric of the common person as in the famous peroration of his address to the democratic nominating in 1896, such as rhetoric that explains why populist abandoned their third-party movement and endorsed Bryan, the democratic candidate. This clearly showed that the poor and the rich had social differences in the voting decision making. The price of the coalition was very high and v ery little of the bold populist critique of the industrial capitalism or of its visionary program of economic cooperation was evident in ensuing campaign. The industrialist and bankers did not benefit because of the hindsight which seemed to make history as it happened inevitable. Their alarm was palpable not only because the farmers movement had spread to reach much of the still large proportion of the population in agriculture but also because of the threat that campaign might become vehicle through which a coalition would be forged with discontented industrial workers in the northeast and Midwest. Under these unstable and unfamiliar conditions, the democratic populist challenge was alarming and horrifying to wealthy democrats as well as republicans. Corporate interest mobilized and poured unprecedented sums into republican coffers for McKinley campaign while the Bryan campaign raise small amount of money. Eventually Bryan lost in the elections because of the reasons below. The ch allenge of 1896 was not only by the sheer weight of the republican-corporate mobilization but by weakness in the democratic-populi...

The essays is used to provide the insight on the issues that are related to the development in the AI technologies. This easy covers the topic of Who needs a driver when an algorithm can do the same work. The essay contains a brief summary of the situation that is at hand, the ethical issues that have arisen due to the situation and also, the sectors of ethics that the issues are affecting also some solutions to resolve the issues have been provide in the essay. 1.For understanding the ethical issues of the technology, it very important to understand the situation that is giving rise to the issue. In a news article released by, The Sydney Morning Herald in their website on September 3, 2011 in has been mentioned that the Artificial Intelligence have developed in recent times to great extent, that they are capable of constructing articles all by themselves which a human would do (LOHR, 2017). Now the real concern is regarding the writers, which the press companies no longer require the writers if all the writing functions are performed by the machines itself then there are no longer requirements of human beings in the companies. This situation gives rise to the ethical issues that are concerning the, technology. 2.The technology that are concerning the situation are known as Narrative Science. The Wisconsin- UNLV football was covered by machine and also the article that was released for the match was also composed by a computer (Ombele et al., 2016). This machine was developed by a start-up based in Evanston in Illinois. The company used the narrative science technologies concept. The technology provided facilities for the computers so that they can mimic the human behavior and reasoning. The company took the data form the sports statistics and also the different type of financial reports. In addition to this statistics the computer can also acquire the statistics involving the different sports franchises and different parameters that are concerning the game and the different teams. There has been a lot of experimentation in the technology form before. Earlier the software could only fill in the blanks with the pre written scripts and data regarding the game or the event in it. But with the development of the technology there has been grate development in the software also and it can produce the quality almost as same as the human being can produce. In addition to this development of the technology have been so vast that the software can now easily construct articles other than sports articles also. In addition to this, there has also been a prediction made that the machine has the ability of winning the Pulitzer prize in about 20 years. But with all these development the main concern has been that, the replacement of the human beings. And this has been the major ethical issue in the situation. The main ethical issues is that the human writers would be losing their jobs and also their positions in the newspaper companies. 3.The other non-ethical issues are that the computers would not be able to produce the emotions of human being that are displayed during a live match and this might have unsatisfied the readers. In addition to this there have been speculations about these machines constructing literature and this gives rise to the question of copying the ideas of the previous authors as these machine use the concepts of using the previously written resources. 4.The main stakeholders who would be affected in this situation are the current writers who would be losing their jobs due to the immergence of this technology and also the readers who love articles by a particular journalist. In addition to this, the concept of journalism might also change. In addition to this, the newspaper companies also would be losing out on their audience. As some of the people love to read articles that are somewhat biased and has a taste of their favorite group. In addition to this, the machines are also capable of creating literature and hence this would be a concern as the machine be copying the ideas of people. 5.Main ethical issues concerned with the situation are the replacement of the human being by the robot journalists. This would make the writers lose their jobs. In addition to this, as result this would also decrease the opportunities of the human beings in the field of journalism. This issue violates all the ethical codes of the classical ethical theories. The theory of Utilitarian is violated by this issue (Cohen Ahn, 2016). This is because the group of journalists who are engaged with the writing processes would be in danger of losing their jobs. The machines would be copying the ideas of the previous publishers and hence the deontological issue would also be violated (Kehoe, 2015). In addition to this the emerging journalists would be losing out on their opportunity to new jobs and hence, would be discouraging them from taking up journalism as profession. This would be violating the virtue ethics (Van Hooft, 2014). 6.For the resolution of the issues a number of options can be availed by the companies. Firstly, they should not be over dependent on this technology Management. In addition to this there must be introduction of some kind of policies that would prevent the machine from copying the ideas of others and creating new literatures. In addition to this, the companies should be looking to incorporate the technologies in their process in addition to the human resources as well. 7.The dependency on the software should not exceed to great extent and hence, the companies should look to make only a limited use of the technology. In addition to this, there should be introduction of policies by the governing bodies of the world that would restrict the algorithms form procuring data that would hamper the privacy issues. In addition to this the companies must also look into the, matter and ensure that their employees do not loss out on their jobs. They should try and incorporate the software into their systems and look to increase the efficiency with incorporating the software with the human resources. 8.The option of incorporating the software with the human resources that are available to the company. This would be increasing the overall efficiency of the company and also the employees would not be losing out on their jobs. Reiters Syndome Essays - Feminism, British People, Womens Rights

Reiters Syndome Equal Rights for Women During the nineteenth century, the women suffrage movement was coming out full force to demand the equal rights of women in the United States and Europe. The women who supported the womens suffrage adapted a Declaration of Principles that simply stated that, We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men and women are created equal (Perry, 1995, p.194). The women suffrage movement not only was striving for equal rights of women but also for voting privileges. Mary Wollstonecrafts protested against the self-abasement of women to men. In the Vindication of the Rights of Woman, Wollstonecraft emphasized that a well-schooled, dependable, and powerful woman would be useful in society and able to manage a family. Women should be allowed to practice medicine as a physician, or manage a store where they can hold their heads high instead wasting their life away. In the writings of John Stuart Mill, he supported women s rights in The Subjection of Women. He believed that males abused th eir power over women, and sought to have women partake in political affairs. After women decided they were getting no where with simple demonstrations they decided to use some militant strategies by disrupting political meetings and enforcing hunger strikes lead by Emmeline Pankhurst. Finally, in 1920 women were allowed to vote in the United States. Women in the 20th century have come along way, although they will always be fighting for the equal rights of women. Men still make a larger salary than most women do and they become higher executives. Women are now allowed to vote and have as good an education as a male. With this education women are becoming physicians and political figures in todays society. Women can now hold their heads up high and be proud of who and what they are. Medicine Essays

The Rise Of The Feminist Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

The Rise Of The Feminist - Essay Example Feminism is a general term used to describe a very broad and complex ideology. There are lots of different feminist theories and approaches, as well as several different types of feminists. The most straightforward meaning however describes it as ‘a movement advocating the rights of women and of their social, political and economic equality with men’ (Roger Scruton). Feminism views the personal experiences of women and men through gender – gender identity (how people think of themselves), gender roles (how people act), and gender stratification (each sex’s social standing) are all rooted in the operation of society. Although feminists are united by their common desire for sexual justice and their concern for women’s welfare, there is a wide spectrum of ‘feminisms’ (Ann Oakley). These can be divided into four broad groups, liberal, radical, Marxist/socialist and Black. This essay will only however look at the former two in more detail. Those who consider themselves to be feminists disagree about many things (this mainly depends on which of variants they fall into); most feminists usually support some general principles however: ‘All the varieties of feminism contain at their heart a paradox – requiring gender consciousness for their basis, their political rallying cry is the elimination of gender roles.’ The importance of change is obviously paramount in feminist thinking as feminism is definitely political since it links ideas to action. Feminism is critical of status quo, and promotes social equality for women and men.

Igor Stravinsky Essay Example for Free

Igor Stravinsky Essay Igor Stravinsky was among the most influential and versatile composers of the last century. His overwhelming commitment to music and remarkable musical career, â€Å"†¦which spanned the convulsive final years of the Imperial Russia and the social ferment of 1960s America, served to establish Stravinsky not only as the most celebrated composer of his time, but also as one of the defining forces of twentieth-century culture† (Wenborn, 1999, p. 10). Born in 1882 to the family of Fyodor Stravinsky, a famous Russian actor and opera singer, Stravinsky grew up in the atmosphere of conservatism and discipline. As his father was a member of Russian cultural elite and had close personal relationships with Turgenev, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and other talented artists of that epoch, the young Stravinsky and his siblings were surrounded with the music of the most progressive Russian composers, such as Borodin, Glinka, Mussorgsky and Dargomizhsky, since their early childhood. When he was 9, the young Stravinsky started his piano lessons followed by studying harmony, music theory and composition. However, his enthusiasm for developing a career in music was somewhat frustrated by the parents who insisted on Stravinsky’s becoming a lawyer. In 1901 he entered the University of St. Petersburg to study law. A year later, Stravinsky took an opportunity to present his compositions to Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, a leading Russian composer of those times, who lately became Stravinsky’s spiritual parent. Rimsky played an important role in musical development of Stravinsky, and till his death in 1908, he was influencing Stravinsky’s creative style. In 1907, inspired by the works of Rimsky, Stravinsky wrote First Symphony in E Flat Major which was dominated by nationalistic motifs. Along with other compositions (such as Fireworks and The Faun and the Shepherdess), the Symphony attracted the attention of Sergei Diaghilev, a Russian ballet impresario who worked for the Ballets Russes in France. On his request, Stravinsky created his first ballets: The Firebird (1910), Petroushka (1911) and The Rite of Spring (1913). The Russian period in the career evolution of Stravinsky can be characterized by a tendency to use ritual personages, motifs and harmonic formulas of Russian folklore, blended with a lot of dissonances and irregular rhythms. Those years were very important for the formation of musical aesthetics of Stravinsky, which can be defined by vivid imagination and various semantic elements, rhythmic freedom, abundance of variations and ostinati, etc. The next, neoclassic period started in the early 1920s, when Stravinsky moved to France. Together with his wife Ekaterina and their four children, Stravinsky settled down in Nice. He continued composing and traveling with the Ballets Russes, looking for new ideas and themes for his works. In this period, Stravinsky was under the influence of French impressionism of the eighteenth century. In his masterpieces, the composer used to refer to various stylistic models: he mastered the styles of the European baroque (Oedipus Rex, 1927), the techniques of old polyphony (the Symphony of Psalms, 1930), and so on. During the 1930s, Stravinsky’s success as a composer was boosted by his increasing popularity as a brilliant pianist and conductor of his own compositions. In 1934 he became a citizen of France, and a year later he had a series of great performances in the United States crowned by a remarkable concert in the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where Stravinsky conducted his newly created ballet The Card Party. The late 1930s were darkened for Stravinsky by the loss of his wife, mother and elder daughter who died of tuberculosis one after another. In 1939 he moved to the U. S. together with his mistress Vera de Bosset, a dancer at the Ballets Russes. Stravinsky’s compositions of the 1940s (including the Symphony in Three Movements (1945), the Ebony Concerto (1946) and other works) can be characterized by a great stylistic diversity. However, his ballet Orpheus completed in 1947 marked the composer’s return to neoclassical traditions. The opera The Rakes Progress (1951), created in collaboration with W. H. Auden and C. Kallman, is considered to be the apex of Stravinsky’s neoclassical period. The libretto was based on a series of engravings of William Hogarth. Musical context of the opera is based on classic harmonies and a wide palette of tone colors, enriched with surprising rhythmic changes and dissonances. The premiere of the opera took place at the famous La Venice in Italy, and in 1997 this opera was restaged by the Metropolitan Opera. In the early 1950s, being under the influence of such artists as A.  Schoenberg and R. Craft, Stravinsky embarked on using the techniques of Serialism in his compositions. During this final period of his career, the composer was experimenting with the twelve-tone methods (dodecaphony) developed by Schoenberg, as well as working on a great number of songs, cantatas and other small chamber works and pieces of vocal music. Many important compositions of this period are dominated by biblical motifs (Canticum Sacrum (1955), A Sermon, a Narrative, and a Prayer (1961), Abraham and Isaac (1963), etc. ) During the last decade of his life, Stravinsky continued performing and conducting his pieces in the most prestigious concert halls of the U. S. and Europe. He visited the Soviet Union and developed friendly relationships with Soviet leader Nikita Krushchev. Stravinsky was a devoted Orthodox Christian and a great father for his children. The composer died in 1971 and was buried on the cemetery of San Michele, next to the grave of his close friend, Sergei Diaghilev. For his achievements and musical innovations, in 1987 Stravinsky was granted the Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement (posthumously). Despite great stylistic contrasts, all the works of Stravinsky retain a certain distinctive identity rooted in his Russian origin and the tendency to use his trademark musical elements (such as ostinati, off-rhythms, etc. ) in the majority of his compositions. Stravinsky was a person of an inexhaustible enthusiasm and eagerness to explore new musical horizons and styles. He was a composer of a phenomenal talent and matchless creative originality, who â€Å"†¦revitalized the rhythms of European music and achieved entirely new sonorities and blends of orchestral colors† (Columbia Encyclopedia, 2007, p. 46141)

Diversity in the Classroom: A Cognitive Call to Action Essay -- Educati

Diversity in the Classroom: A Cognitive Call to Action The United States is expecting drastic changes in the diversity of its population over the next 50 years. Minorities will become a larger portion of the country’s population. Changes will need to be made to the way our country operates, especially in education. New, innovative and inclusive ways of teaching will replace traditional methods. For these new changes to go smoothly, steps will be taken to implement diverse populations in schools, helping students benefit from the values of other cultures while learning to live along side each other. The competitive and biased curriculums will take back seat to new ones that cater to all members of the population, leaving behind disruptive and antisocial behaviors. And finally, the teacher population will become as diverse as the student counterpart, creating more chances for students to identify with their leaders. This research paper will identify problematic situations for educational diversity as well as examine the effec tiveness of diverse populations in classroom settings with respect to the development of student's world skills and understanding, openness and tolerance of diversity. What do we mean when we say diversity in the classroom? Diversity in the classroom is the different cultural make-up of a student body. Right now, it is estimated that by 2050, the non-Hispanic White portion of the U.S. population is projected to decrease from approximately 72% to less than 53%. The African American population is expected to increase from under 13% to over 15% and the Hispanic population is expected to increase from 11% to 24%. I have overcome these in my own personal and professional endeavors, but it can be hard to do for young students. Not only was my school majority white students, but the schools it fed into were quite the opposite, creating drastic contrast. Montgomery Blair High School, not 20 minutes, prides itself in being one the most diverse schools in the nation (Hadidi, A.24). My school was made up of kids that were all exactly or mostly the same. When it comes down to it, although I had the most caring teachers in the world, I learned very little about life and our nation’s great diversity as a student there. The nation is changing and the school systems throughout the country need to adapt their curriculums to handle it. Through new strategies and responsive teaching, teachers will pave the way for a heterogenous, successful and peaceful society. Significance of Plastics

Significance * Plastic bags are not renewable, which means they cannot be easily recycled like paper bags. They are made of petrochemicals, which is what makes them non-renewable and a risk to the health of the planet. They last for hundreds of years, all the while doing damage to natural habitats and killing animals that mistake them for food. The more plastic bags people use, the greater the chances of environmental damage. Effects * If not carefully disposed of, plastic bags can be devastating to animal life. DEFRA (Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs) reported that 1,678,900 tons of plastic packaging was in the UK waste stream in 2001. Because plastic bags do not decay quickly, they stay in environments longer, causing more build-up on the natural landscape than a more degradable material like paper would. The Marrickville Council reports that over 100,000 whales, turtles and birds die every year as a result of plastic in their environment. Suffocation * Infants and young children have died as a result of playing with plastic bags. Every year, the Consumer Product Safety Commission receives about 25 reports of plastic bag-related infant death. Because of the thin, airtight material, infants can easily block their mouths and nostrils with the plastic bag and suffocate. Prevention/Solution * Abstaining from plastic bag use as much as possible will reduce the chances of accidental infant death, and it will reduce the amount of plastic waste in the environment. A plastic bag is also reusable, though. It does not necessarily have to be thrown away after a single use. Try to use each plastic bag for as long as possible. This will help reduce the number of plastic bags in circulation. Expert Insight * Some experts want to ban the use of plastic bags entirely. Los Angeles has passed recommendations that will make them illegal in supermarkets by 2012. The British government sees plastic bags as a symbol for a throwaway society. They claim, â€Å"[Plastic bags] are a significant cause of litter†¦. Most of the rest of the 13 billion bags used each year end up in landfills. † Alternatives to Plastic Bags * Canvas bags are a smart alternative to plastic. Canvas can be washed and reused, and lasts up to 10 years on average. Bringing a few canvas bags with you to the store will greatly reduce the number of plastic bags in the environment. Paper bags are not as beneficial for the environment as canvas bags, but they are recyclable. Infants cannot suffocate on paper bags either. If you're creative, you can make an old plastic bag into an arts-and-crafts project (see Resources). Julius Caesar And Napoleon Bonaparte - 1431 Words

History holds many great and inspiring leaders, some being remembered by many as kings of their time. Two of these incredible individuals are Julius Caesar and Napoleon Bonaparte, both legends and incredible rulers of their time. These men represented what a leader should be, and exactly what made leaders so powerful. Although these two men lived in completely different time periods there are similarities and differences that connect the two. Napoleon Bonaparte was born on August 15, 1769 in Ajaccio, Corsica. Even though he returned to France a few years after to better constitutionalize France, he failed and returned to exile. Napoleon w as a magnificent leader, even though he became over zealous and power hungry, Napoleon was a driven man, never secure, never satisfied. â€Å"Power is my mistress,† he said. He demonstrated the charisma and intelligence necessary to lead a nation. He was a well respected leader that set the stage for many others to come, and that is revered by many.† Julius Caesar was the roman emperor from 49-44 BCE and was regarded as a great and powerful leader. His family was very well respected and helped him attain the tools necessary to lead. He was a supporter of the Populares, who were a political group that worked towards a better life for the middle and lower class. He had an amazing amount of energy, physical and mental, and held good health for most of his life. He inspired the public to follow him; thus, they named him emperor of Rome. This led him to challenge authority in Rome and create the First Triumvirate, or dominated by three powers. Caesar was a ruthless man, w ho did whatever he had to do in order to maintain power. Caesar often did things that were seen as vile and even illegal, yet he did them to maintain authority and lead, So blatant, however, were the
